Cassandra soon discovered that Damon hadn’t been exaggerating.

Shortly after he had gone, Lottie appeared with one of her kaftans and Cassandra told her, ‘I’ll just go through to the bathroom to slip it on.’ But when she put her foot to the ground she let out a cry of pain. It felt as though she was being pierced by red-hot needles.

‘Lean on me,’ Lottie told her, offering her one competent stout arm and leading Cassandra out into the hallway. ‘And just give me a shout when you’re ready to go outside. That’s one sore foot you’ve got there, young lady.’

It certainly was. Cassandra hobbled into the bathroom, where she stripped off her swimsuit and pulled on the bright blue kaftan, belatedly realising she didn’t have any underwear. Oh, well, she would just have to do without, she decided. And the kaftan was perfectly modest. No one would know.

She pulled a face at her reflection in the mirror over the sink. What was it Damon had said—that she was the most composed-looking near-drowning victim he’d ever set eyes on in his life? Not a hair out of place? Well, she could see what he meant. Her blonde hair had stayed in place—well, more or less!—but that was just because it was tied back in its band.

Carefully, she smoothed it with her fingers now, securing the elasticated band at the back. She was rather glad that was the case—that she hadn’t been looking as she’d felt. For she’d been feeling quite frayed and vulnerable and helpless. The original damsel in distress. And that was not an image she wished to project. Especially not with Damon.

Finally ready, she pulled open the door and stuck her head out.

‘OK, Lottie!’ she called. ‘Your invalid awaits you!’
